Pond to be fixed, if we can raise $600k Kate Russell

Boats could be back sailing in Tahunanui’s Modellers Pond sooner than expected, after Nelson City councillors voted to push ahead with fixing the ponds algae problem on Thursday - but there is a catch. The Nelson Society of Modellers needs to raise $600,000 by September to make the upgrade a reality. The council has committed $600,000 towards the $1,190,000 project – meaning that the Modellers have six months to make up the shortfall, but president of the society, Nigel Gibbs, says they are “quietly confident” that they can raise the money in time. A recommendation to give the society up until the end of November to raise the funding short-fall was amended at Thursday’s meeting, with councillors voting 7 5 to push the deadline forward to the end of September, in order to get the project underway sooner. With a new council to be voted in this October, the project could have been held over to the next annual plan if the deadline had been left at November.

Trafalgar Centre set for Giant re-opening Nelson’s main indoor civic centre will reopen this Saturday night when the Nelson Giants play their first home game of the National Basketball League. Mayor Rachel Reese says it will be great to have the Giants back playing in their spiritual home of “the hangar”.

“I’m sure the crowd will love it and get behind them too, and a first home game win would be the perfect way to mark the occasion, so I encourage Nelsonians to turn out in force and cheer on their team,” she says. Over 60 different companies have been involved in the $12.9 million strengthening

and redevelopment of the Trafalgar Centre and Rutherford Park so far. Car park kerbing is all in, the seal is underway and the new access road should be chip-sealed this week. Temporary seats have been set up for the game, with more seating to go under the

bleachers this week. Other work, including work on the new northern upgrade, will be continuing and the resurfacing of the main hall is scheduled to occur in June. The completion of the northern building, landscaping and other works is targeted for August 2016.

But if the funding target is met by September, Nigel says the project can then start as soon as resource consent is granted. Councillor Matt Lawrey, who proposed the amendment, says the pond has “given the city a headache for more than a decade”. “We don’t want this issue dragging on into another term of council – this council should be the one that moves the city forward with this issue,” he said. Councillor Pete Rainey echoed Matt’s sentiment, saying that council needed to “sort it out for Tahunanui and green-light it”. Nigel Gibbs says the society is happy with how the council has consulted with them, and has no problems with the deadline being moved forward. “It’s a big ask, but if we can’t raise

Algae in the Tahuna Modellers Pond last year. the money in six months, we not going to able to do it in nine months,” he says. “Previous investigations into whether anyone would help us were favourable, so we just need to pin people down and get them to put their money where their mouth is.” The project would see the removal of contaminated material in the pond, installation of subsurface drainage, installation of a concrete floor to the pond and

aerators to increase oxygenation. It would also involve modifications to the centennial pump station, and installing automated controls at the Parkers Cove outlet and the pond inlet/outlet weir to coordinate emptying and filling the pond with sea water. Two other options for the pond were also presented to council last June, which included keeping the pond “as is”, or reinstating it to an “estuarine environment”, which at an estimated cost

of $690,000, is likely to be the option that council will endorse if the funding deadline is not met. Deputy mayor Paul Matheson, who is has been a vocal supporter of keeping the pond, says he is “delighted” that the project is moving forward. “This is a project that belongs to Nelson city, its visitors and others,” he says. “We must commend the Modellers Association for wanting to get behind it and help fundraise to ensure that it retains its interest and attraction for future generations. I think we should all be delighted that this little icon of ours remains in the city for some time.” If people want to donate, they can contact the club through their website, http://www.nelsonmodellers.org.nz/contact/, or a Givealittle page will be set up in the coming weeks.

Rainey to stand for mayor Three-term city councillor Pete Rainey has announced that he will stand against mayor Rachel Reese at this year’s local body elections. Pete has been chair of the community services committee for nine years. He was elected as part of the Hands Up ticket in 2007. In a statement announcing his bid, Pete highlighted his business background and

made his stance clear on several key issues. On a performing arts centre: “We need to give the revamped Trafalgar Centre a chance to deliver”. On the waterfront: “I pushed in the last term of council for the purchase of properties that are strategically vital to Nelson unlocking the poten-

tial of its waterfront.” On Southern Link: “I support looking into some really quite simple concepts such as a pedestrian overpass to solve the bottleneck at Nelson College and a more free flowing intersection at Tahunanui.” Rainey is the third confirmed mayoral candidate for this year’s Nelson City Council elections.

Nelson set to profit from Lions rugby tour Kate Russell

Nelson’s recent bumper tourism season is set to continue into the depths of next winter, with local tourism operators saying they are already fielding enquiries for the 2017 Lions Tour of New Zealand. Even though there are no games being played in Nelson, one Tahunanui Bed and Breakfast owner says he has been taking bookings for the tour since January, as people are struggling to find accommodation in Wellington. “I think a lot of people are choosing to stay here and

Chicken Breasts

commute to Wellington for the games,” he says. “I’ve never experienced anything like it.” Gisela Purcell, international marketing manager for Nelson Tasman Tourism, says that she is also seeing a demand for Nelson accommodation during the tour next June and July. “I had one agent in Sydney asking me about accommodation during the tour as apparently Wellington is already filling up,” she says. “She was planning to fly clients to Nelson to sleep and back to Wellington for the games.” She says it “makes sense” for people to consider basing

themselves here, with a short flight time to the capital and a wider range of regular flights now available. “It’s relatively cost effective, plus it gives visitors a whole other experience,” says Gisela. Lynda Keene, chief executive officer of Nelson Tasman Tourism, says the bookings are understandable, considering the UK market is Nelson’s largest visitor market. “Having an event like this will be great for the region and help with improving winter visitor numbers, and we are keen to promote the region to attract fans travelling around the country.”

Nayland College’s 50th Jubilee celebrations saw the largest gathering of foundation pupils since the very first day of the school’s existence. The school’s four-day reunion hosted 510 former staff and students, including 55 foundation pupils. In the class of 1966, Chris Wells was one of the first Nayland College students and says his memories all stemmed from the rugby field. “We were a pretty tight bunch because we were the underdogs for so many years. We had to prove ourselves and make our own name, and rugby was a big part of that.” Chris says the Nayland-Waimea rugby rivalry was as intense as the New Zealand-Australia rivalry. “Beating Waimea on the field was the premium, bugger Nelson Boys, they were just a rabble over the years, but Waimea were the new kids on the block and we loved to knock ‘em down.” Foundation pupil John Barker says he’ll never forget the first school assembly. “It was just a small gathering behind where the music block is now and we had to just stand outside, some guys even passed out

because of the heat, it was roasting. But each year assemblies got bigger as we built up the school, form by form, and eventually we got our own hall,” says John. While John remains a local, some of the former staff and students have come from as far as Brazil and the United Kingdom, and John says it’s great walking to school with his former classmates again. Principal Daniel Wilson says his favourite event was the Chatters and Platters evening on Friday. “I’ve never had so many conversations with former students talking about old memories, in the space of only a couple of hours,” says Daniel. “I jumped up on stage and peformed with the jazz band and there was this awesome moment of standing with my current students and looking out at all the former students and principals, and realising that I’m part of something so much bigger that just keeps moving forward. He says the reunion went “amazingly well”. The reunion opened with a powhiri on Thursday and has since featured an open school day, group photographs, sports tournaments, a game of golf, bike ride, formal dinner and several other social events.

.CO.NZ the job last Thursday, upset at a breakdown in pay negotiations. The striking workers were from the morning fill, bakery and butchery teams. Nelson-based FIRST Union organiser Rachel Boyack says the union has been trying to negotiate a collective agreement since November last year at the region’s largest supermarket, but the owner refuses to bargain over pay rates which are a fundamental part of any collective agreement. She says workers at Pak ’n Save Richmond are paid around $2 less than workers at Countdown supermarkets in Nelson and Pak ’n Save workers in the North Island. Morning fill worker Cam Scott says he doesn't feel he and fellow workers are being treated with respect. He says the reaction from non-union staff when they walked off was mixed. “Some were supportive and others were unsupportive. There were a couple of murmurings from one or two people and the only manager there looked pretty shocked.”

Volunteers needed for Poppy Day collection Andrew Board The RSA’s annual fundraiser is just weeks away, but with their WW2 members now well into their 90s they are relying on volunteers to do the collecting for them. Nelson RSA president Barry Pont says it has been traditional for WW2 veterans to collect on Poppy Day, but that is getting harder for many of them as they are now in their 90s, with one member over 100. He’s hoping that members of the public will volunteer an hour

of their time to collect at one of the various stalls they have around the region. “All up we need at least 50 volunteers and we already have about 25 signed up. We man the stalls on a roster of at least an hour each, so it’s not too strenuous,” he says. All money raised from Poppy Day collection stays locally and is used for welfare costs for returned servicemen or their widows or dependants. Stalls are held in Stoke, Tahunanui and Nelson. Barry says Poppy Day is on Friday

April 15 this year, with Anzac Day ten days later on April 25. Last year the dawn parade was held at Trafalgar Park to commemorate 100 years since the Gallipoli landings. Barry says this year’s service will return to Anzac Park. “We’re going back to our traditional Anzac Park for the dawn parade. If there was a big occasion we’d look at Trafalgar Park, but we like the tradition of Anzac Park.” If you’d like to volunteer on Poppy Day, call Barry on 548 6815 or 547 7562.

Trolley Derby, Tuesday, March 15: While the Mike Pero Trolley Derby offered spectators and drivers some great racing down Nelson’s Collingwood St, it also raised vital funds for Big Brothers, Big Sisters Nelson. The organisation provides mentoring friendships to children in need of additional adult support and this year they received $1400 from the event. The money will be going towards finding new mentors as well as supporting current matches. Big Brothers, Big Sisters has a long waiting list of young people in need of adult support and are always keen to hear from anyone interested in volunteering. People who think they would like to be a mentor can contact the local organisation on 545 9864. Victory aims to set poi world record, Tuesday, March, 22: Nicola Bare from the Victory Community Centre says they are getting great feedback since the event was advertised and they have started making poi, have a great group of people plaiting strands and received enough foam for poi stuffing. “We think, in typical Nelson fashion, people will leave it to the last minute to register, so we are just organising,” she says. The team at the Victory Community Centre would also like to thank sponsors of the event, who are: Bays Joinery, Ecomoon Boutique, HotHouse, Prices Pharmacy and Jon Ichon from Summit Real Estate.

Snapper Classic raises $8k for Coastguard Tasman Bay Snapper Classic hooked some impressive figures this year: 240 people took part, 140 snapper were weighed in, $37,000 in prizes was given out, and now it has announced that $8000 was donated to the Nelson Coastguard. The Tasman Bay Snapper Classic was held earlier this month and was a huge success with the largest ever competitor turn out. Its prize pool was also the biggest ever and included a $14,500 boat as one of its prizes. That was won by Nelson man Jeff Holden for catching the average-weighed snapper at 2.07kg.

But Troy says what was particularly pleasing was the amount they were able to raise for the Coastguard. “They do a great job and it was a good charity for this event with all the boaties taking part and able to help give back.” Coastguard president Graeme Richards says the money will go into its replacement boat fund. “It’s fantastic, we’re really excited about. We thought it was best to put it to the boat fund because we like to keep this kind of donation away from general admin.” Members of the Coastguard also helped out on the day. Troy says the competition lost about 100

entrants due to a late weather-enforced change of date. “Which was disappointing but not unexpected with the change of dates.” He says the fact they still got the biggest ever turn-out despite the changes shows how popular the competition is becoming. “The feedback has been great, I’ve approaches already for next year,” he says. Troy also wanted to thank the major sponsors, including Houston Motor Group, Speight's Ale House, Honda, DNA Boats, Big Blue Dive and Fish, Hirepool, Lion, Port Nelson Ltd and Nelson Weekly.

Suburban Club sold Locally Owned and Operated

Andrew Board

A buyer has been found for the buildings owned by the Nelson Suburban Club, saving it from a $2.7 million debt. The buyer – Gibbons Property – has bought the buildings and land on Tahunanui Drive and it will lease it back to the club for a minimum of 12 months. News of the sale was first reported by nelsonlive.co.nz last Tuesday and club members were officially told of the deal at a meeting last Tuesday night. The sale means the club gets to continue to operate from its purposebuild facility while relieving it from the crippling $2.7million debt that was incurred in the middle 2000s for a building upgrade. Treasurer Ben Douglas says the

deal is the best they could have hoped for. “I’m pretty stoked with what we’ve achieved. Of all the scenarios that faced us, this was the best one. But there is a bit of sadness tinged with it.” The Suburban Club has owned the site for four decades and it was valued at just under $4 million. Ben says while there is no guarantee that they will be able to occupy the site beyond a year, the purchasers have said they would work in with the club. “Every party that we’ve worked with has been really good and the fact that the club can continue to operate from that building is good news.” Gibbons Group CEO Scott Gibbons says it is possible that more businesses could occupy space within the current building, but said it was still "early days".

Feedback sought for Betts Carpark Nelson City Council is looking for public feedback on its proposal to sell Betts Carpark. A recent Property Asset Review identified that Betts Carpark, at the corner of Trafalgar Square and Nile Street, Nelson, is under used, and that continued ownership of the site may not be in the best interest of ratepayers. To find out more about the proposal to sell Betts Carpark, and to give your feedback online, visit nelson.govt.nz, search term = Betts Carpark. Feedback must be submitted before 5pm on Monday 11 April. A decision will be made by Council in early June. Easter surprise for Brook residents Jessie Johnston

A couple of Brook residents got an Easter surprise on Saturday when a bunny appeared on their doorstep. Brook St residents Jenna and Kyle Taylor were sitting out on their deck on Saturday afternoon when they saw Rupert, a Flemish Giant rabbit, hopping up their drive. After a second or two of shock, Jenna quickly grabbed the rabbit and posted a picture of the huge bunny on Facebook. He was soon identified and within around five minutes Rupert’s owners had made

contact. It turns out Rupert lived just a few doors up the road and his Easter Weekend escapade was just one of several. Owner Leighton Heal says Rupert is just over a year old and still not fully grown, he also has a habit of getting free and visiting the neighbours. Squeezing through the cat flap and eating his way through a wooden pallet gate are popular methods of escape, with his longest trip away from home lasting five days. Rupert is now back home and resting up for his next neighbourhood wander.

COME TALK TO US

Until Sunday April 24, the NZ Transport Agency is seeking your views on how best to address existing and future transport issues on the arterial networks between the Annesbrook Drive and Haven Road roundabouts. This work is part of the Nelson Southern Link Investigation, part of the Government’s Accelerated Regional Roading Package for state highway projects.

Please come to the following public information sessions and ask us any questions you have relating to the work we have done or will assist with you giving feedback.

Your contribution will help us finalise the Programme Business Case for the project and, in particular, allow us to identify a preferred approach to help address Nelson’s arterial transport problems. We also want your feedback on the Rocks Road Walking and Cycling Investigation as it is important that key decisions made on both projects are informed by one another as they advance. Now is the time where we look at all the possible ideas. We want your feedback on three potential approaches that have been developed. We also want the community’s views on other options, or combinations of options, to address two identified problems on Nelson’s arterial routes.

Comedian host show for parents Jessie Johnston Unfortunately, children don’t come with an instruction manual, which is why Nayland College’s PTA are organising The Parenting Show with Pio. The Parenting Place is an Auckland-based organisation that offers advice, support and educational courses for parents around the country. They have a range of speakers who travel throughout New Zealand doing presentations and on Thursday, March 31, Maori comedian PioTerei will be talking to local parents about building awesome whanau. While the presentation will include topics such as giving kids confidence and resilience to problem solve, solid foundations made up of love and values and developing a positive atmosphere in the house, Pio will be delivering the show with a light-hearted, comedic approach that will entertain just as much as it will inform. Organised by Nayland College’s PTA, The Parenting Show is not a fundraiser but a community event with a mission to benefit local parents. Pomeroy’s coffee, cakes and slices will also be available on the night. Tickets to The Parenting Show with Pio can be bought for $15 from Nayland College reception, from theparentingplace.com or on the night. Doors will open for the show this Thursday at 6:30pm with the show starting at 7pm.

Your Voice

St Vincent St cycleway: I've been reading comments about the cycleway, and can hardly believe my eyes. I think it's a great idea and works well for people who are good drivers and cyclists. There will always be people who shouldn't be on the road, but that is just a fact of life. I am often in the area both driving and cycling, and think it's great. Providing people using it are considerate of others. Roger Grey.

That is great. I know Doris and her family. She is a wonderful lady. Charmaine Perriam.

Cyclist knocked off bike on Rocks Rd: Drivers - please shoulder check and check your mirrors before opening your door, then open it slowly while checking again over your shoulder. Cyclists - please look into parked cars as you approach, watch for signal and break lights, be aware of moving traffic around you in case you need to move away from vehicles parked along the road. What is happening to this lovely place called Nelson? Where are these dropkicks, drug/alcohol brain dead, lazy, pathetic losers coming from? Wish they'd go back where they came from or be "disposed" of. Alison Holmes. Southern Link consultation: Here we go again, more talk, as if Nelson had not been considering a Southern Link for the past thirty or forty years. Talk, talk and more talk and still not a plan in sight. Phillip Guard is right - just stop the talk and get on with it. Ian Millward says that we owe it to future generations, etc. What the future generation will do is to revile us for not doing enough now. Forget about Rocks Rd, nothing is ever going to be done about changing that because the ever present crew of "objectors", including those on the council, and the resource mis-management act which hardly anyone understands, won't let it happen. Wilf Tunney.

This is why biking round Rocks Road always scares me. I have to go that way to work, but there is no space between opening car doors and logging trucks... How can we remind everyone to LOOK before ever opening a car door beside a cycle way? I also had to ask the Council about getting vegetation cut back as it was most of the way across the cycle lane in two places. Meant having to come to complete stop rather than be taken out by a truck. Jacqui Irwin.

Rainbow Rage on one wheel and one leg: Wow Ethen, well done. Janet Bruce.

You're joking. Let's go steal cigarettes with a hammer. I can't believe how much Nelson has changed over the last 6 months, it's so sad, it was a wonderful safe place now you can't even leave your car unlocked/locked. Why don't these people go get a bloody job and work hard to get the things they need. How things have changed, wonder why? Jude Biggs.

Pete Rainey to stand for mayor: Pete Rainey has now publicly stated that a performing arts centre at the Trafalgar Centre is his focus rather than a very expensive new separate centre. The proof is in the pudding. Ratepayers will be convinced of his sudden financial prudence if he votes against the proposal he introduced into this year’s annual plan, which funds a report on the very costly centre he now states is not his focus. Ratepayers should note with interest what he does when council votes for its annual plan that is now open for submission. Dan McGuire.

Milkie goes back to his past Mud runners ready for fun

Simon Bloomberg

Nelson milkie Trevor Nicholls is looking forward to a blast from the past and reducing his carbon footprint when when he starts delivering milk in glass bottles again. A lot of milk used to come in glass bottles when Trevor started delivering around Nelson and Tasman 21 years ago, but it was later replaced with cardboard cartons and plastic bottles. Now Trevor has decided to take his business, Milk and More, back in time and offer whole milk, from Stokebased Oaklands Farm, in good old-fashioned glassbottles. "We've had quite a bit of demand for it since the success of Oaklands Farm milk," Trevor says. "It tastes better out of glass and it's better for the environment because the bottles are reusable and the milk is a local product."

Trevor Nicholls of Milk and More with the Oaklands Farm milk he will be delivering in bottles from next month. Photo: Simon Bloomberg Oaklands Farm milk is already sold from vending machines around Nelson and Tasman, and Trevor says he is keen to try and expand its market. The fresh, whole milk is produced by A2 cows on

Oaklands Farm on the corner of Saxton and Suffolk roads in Stoke. "It's becoming really popular, but not everyone can get out to a vending machine so I thought it would be good to see if people

want it delivered. I don't have any idea what the take-up will be but it's already popular so it could be huge," he says. Trevor will start delivering Oaklands Farm milk from April 4.

The Muddy Buddy adventure run is being held this Sunday when hundreds of people will slip, slop and slide their way around the mudflats of the Moutere Estuary near Tasman School. The annual event has grown in popularity since it started in 2010, last year attracting almost 1000 mud runners. Although Muddy Buddy is all about having fun, it has been valuable for the school, raising around $11,000 last year to fund the purchase of IT equipment and security lighting while previous year’s earnings have paid for the extension of the adventure playground. On Sunday, Muddy Buddies can do one to three laps of the 2km course which includes obstacles designed to get them as muddy as possible. The event will also be a fancy-dress party with a prize for the craziest outfit - there are also plenty of spot prizes including two bikes from Avanti Plus Richmond. People can enter Muddy Buddy online at tasman. school.nz for $10 per individual and $35 for a family, or on the day for $15 per person or $45 for a family. Coffee from The Grind Coffee Roasters and food will be available, with the Water Boy and Tasman Water Care Distribution on hand to help wash down mud runners after the event. Muddy Buddy will start from Tasman School on Aporo Rd this Sunday at 11am with registration from 9.30am to 10.30am. Shoes must be worn.

From the health basics such as hearing and blood pressure tests, to social opportunities for those with a bit more time on their hands, stall holders are not only available to talk face to face with anyone interested in their services, they aim to be as interactive as possible, offering people the chance to have a go at a range of activities. Those out there with skills they wish to carry on into their retirement can utilise them within groups including Menz Shed, who will be doing demonstrations on the day, and the trapping and bird recovery groups that work out the back of Richmond. The expo will also include companion driving services such as Driving Miss Daisy and retirement villages such as Ernest Rutherford, who offer a number of retirement living options includ-

ing independent town houses and apartments, serviced apartments and a care centre. Anisy’s Tasman Funeral Home will be there to answer any questions people have about saying goodbye to their loved ones, as well as giving advice on how to plan your own funeral now, making things easier on family and friends. Grey Power will also have a stall present on the day, and with memberships expiring at the end of March, now is the perfect time to renew yours, or talk to them about joining. Grey Power promotes the welfare and well-being of all citizens over the age of 50 and there are a huge number of benefits to being a member. As well as receiving discounted products and services locally and around the country, Grey Power members have the opportunity to switch their electricity and gas accounts to Grey Power Electricity, which means low Grey Power prices, transparent billing, price protection on your energy rate and their team will make the whole process of switching hassle -free. This year, the event is proud to host three great seminars that are full of useful information for looking after yourself and your loved ones. The first seminar, which will kick off at 10:15am, features Eco Design

Almost 400 children from three Nelson schools have been learning potentially lifesaving water safety skills at the Richmond Aquatic Centre thanks to a generous sponsorship from Bluebridge Cook Strait Ferry. Bluebridge is a long-time supporter of Swimming New Zealand and water safety programmes and last Wednesday and Thursday helped get children from St Joseph's, Nelson Central and Stoke schools into the water to learn new some skills. Ten instructors from the Swim Magic Swim School showed the children how to use lifejackets, swim in clothing, rescue a swimmer using a throwrope, boat safety and river safety as part of the Bluebridge Water Safety Day. "It's been a great opportunity for the kids to learn all these water safety skills," Nelson Central School teacher Deanne Kawe says. "The support provided by Bluebridge has been awesome - we don't have the facilities or the funding to do this otherwise." Although keeping safe in and around water is a deadly serious matter, Deanne says their students had an enjoyable time learning all the new skills. "We had 135 of our students here over the two days and

Bowlers lead Wanderers to one day crown

BASKETBALL: The Mike Pero Nelson Giants will have revenge on their mind when they play their first home game of the season at the Trafalgar Centre this Saturday night. The Giants will host the Taranaki Mountain Airs, the same team that beat them 75-74 in New Plymouth on Sunday. The Giants game tips off at 7pm on Saturday. RUGBY: Nelson look to be the real deal this season, with its second in as many matches. Nelson hosted Waimea Old Boys under lights at Trafalgar Park on Thursday night and ran away with a 33-8 win. Wanderers was also a big winner, beating Marist in Brightwater 41-0. In the other Car Company division one clash, Kahurangi beat Stoke 21-17. That leaves Nelson and Wanderers as the only unbeaten sides in the competition. In the division two competition, Marist beat Wanderers 20-17, Nelson beat Waimea 32-10, Huia beat Stoke 75-20 and Takaka beat Rangers 3929.

It was Wanderers’ boosted batting attack that was supposed to do the damage, in the end it was their bowlers that secured the club the region’s one-day cricket crown. Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers batted first in the Nelson Cricket one-day final at Saxton Oval on Saturday. Their total of 197 didn’t seem enough, especially when Waimea Toi Toi United were 121/2 with ten overs to play in the 45-over contest. But then came the fight-back from Wanderers, first Dan Cooper snared two key wickets, then he and Connor Goodman put the brakes on Waimea’s attack. Waimea eventually fell short of the target, finishing their allotted overs at 178/8. Wanderers captain Dan Cooper says he felt the game was “slipping away” when he brought himself on to bowl. “I wasn’t really sure how we were going to win it. But it paid off, I got a couple of wickets and Goody [Goodman] did a good job. Then the run rate started to get up to 8s and 9s and we could afford to throw the field back because they needed boundaries.” The games ends the senior club cricket season with Stoke/Nayland earlier winning both the two-day and T20 competitions.

When Libby Brumwell got her first taste of boxing at last year’s Fight 4 Victory, she loved it so much she decided to take it up as a sport. A year later the pint-sized hairdresser climbed in the ring again, this time for her first amateur fight at the South Island Novice Tournament in Christchurch. Because the corporate fight counted as her first fight, Libby was put in the novice grade, for those with one to five fights. There she was matched against an MMA fighter from Dunedin. Libby admits she was a tad nervous. “I was really nervous and really surprised that I won,” she says. She didn’t just win, Libby’s result was unanimous with the judges, meaning all three thought she won each round. It was one of four wins for the Whakatu Boxing Club at the event. Head coach Dion Hall says it was a great weekend for his fighters. “We took seven [fighters] down hoping to get matches and five did, of those five, four won. We were one judge off a perfect weekend,” he says. The only Whakatu fighter to lose was Thornton Taulilo, on split decision. Dion says he was a standout performer despite the loss. “Thor stood out, just for his composure and how we went about

things and how he stuck to his fight plan.He lost, but in saying that he put an eight count out on the guy and the other guy couldn’t go any further because his jaw was too sore.” The other Whakatu fighters were Luca Orlowski, who beat Thomas Harvey from Christchurch in the under 57 cadet class; Jared Johnstone who beat Ryan Gilbert from Dunedin in the under 57kg novice junior class and SabianTaulilo who beat Jason Devine in the under 63kg debut junior class. Another Whakatu fighter, Riley Orlowski, also attended the event but couldn’t get matched for a fight. Dion says it was a great experience for his fighters. “Being the first time in the ring for many of them, I was really pleased with how they did. They train really hard so it’s good for them to put it into practice and I thought they looked pretty natural out there.” He says the club has about 12 members, all training with the goal of fighting. Many of those who competed a little over a week ago were competing for the first time. Dion says the club is now eyeing up another competition in Christchurch on April 30. “We’ll be putting a lot of fighters forward to see if they can get a good even match. That’s a big part of it, I don’t mind if the guys lose, as long as it was a good even match up.”

Nelson teams get ready for Godzone Locally Owned and Operated

Simon Bloomberg

Nelson’s John Harris, Vicky Shelling, Stephen Busby and Callum Irvine aren’t expecting to get much sleep over the next week as they take on the biggest challenge of their adventure racing careers. Team Silky is one of 71 teams entered in the Godzone adventure race that starts this weekend. The expedition-length multisport race will involve kayaking, canoeing, trekking and mountainbiking through the Tasman district’s hinterland and John says its extreme scale will make it “a big unknown” for their novice team. Although John has done a lot of 24-hour races, he says the Godzone Pursuit teams will cover around 400km in up to six days and that’s a big step up. It will be even more of a learning curve for Vicky, who has only done 12-hour races, and Stephen and Callum, who have been limited to six-hour races. “We have gone on some solid

training missions where we have only slept a few hours over two days, but racing for six days will be very different,” John says. “It’s hard to know how your feet will feel after six days or how sore your backside will be on the bike - it’s a big unknown.” Team member Stephen Busby admits he’s feeling “nervous” about the challenge, especially dealing with long days and nights without much sleep. Adventure racers typically only sleep a few hours a night during six or seven day races. “It’s one thing to do a decent, long day in training but it’s another to do an expedition-length race,” Stephen says. “It’s a long time for things to go wrong.” However, Stephen says he’s confident they have the “right mixture” in their team to get through the challenges and reach their “ultimate goal of finishing the race as friends”. “We have a good team dynamic with a good range of skills which is important. The top teams are successful because they are fit,

The seven-day, 500km Godzone Pure starts on Saturday and includes top Nelson adventure racers Ash and Naomi Whitehead and Brent Edwards who join Auckland’s Stu Lynch in Team Swordfox. Workmates sons now team-mates

Locally Owned and Operated

Simon Bloomberg Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Craig Ingham and Chris Trathen have been workmates and business partners for 15 years and now their sons, Tom Ingham and Nic Trathen, are team-mates after being named in this year's Mike Pero Nelson Giants. Tom, 23, joined the side this season after playing for the Otago Nuggets while studying at Otago University, while Nic, 19, made the jump to the Giants after showing potential as a development player last year. Proud dads, Craig and Chris say they are thrilled their sons have achieved their dream of playing for the Giants although Craig thought that Tom was always going to be a cricketer. A former Central Districts opening batsman, Craig coached Tom in the Waimea College First XI and Nelson age group teams and he showed enough promise to suggest he would follow in his father's footsteps. Craig also concedes that he thought Tom may not be tall enough to make the grade as a basketballer until he started to shoot up and hit 1.9m in his last few years at school. "I don't know where he got his height from. When I was playing cricket we were known as the Nelson Gnomes so that gives you an idea of how tall I am. "But I guess Tom's got a few tall uncles and he's got their genes. He was a handy cricketer but he found his passion

Workmates and team-mates, from left, Craig and Tom Ingham and Chris and Nic Trathen. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. in basketball and it took over. "He'd been picked up as a recruitment player for the Giants at a young age so he had a lot on and something had to give and it was cricket. I think it's nice that it's his own thing." In contrast, Nic, who is 2m tall, was always going to have the physical attributes to be a top basketball with Chris standing at 1.934m. "Nic's got my height but I didn't play basketball so he didn't anything else from me. It was all rugby for me but I reckon I would have been a bloody good basketballer," Chris jokes. However, Tom and Nic both say that their physical attributes wouldn't have counted for anything without "amazing" coaches like the late Greg Wright and former Giants captain Ed Book at Waimea College. And that's the main reason why the two young Giants are stepping up and taking over the college's basketball programme from their predecessors. "There hasn't been anyone permanent run-

ning the basketball at Waimea since Greg's passing," Tom says. "There have been some parents who have stepped up and done a great job but we wanted to get something a bit more structured. I talked to Nic about it and he was really keen being an Waimea College old boy. We both wanted to try and start something special at the college for the boys." Tom says the coaching is going really well so far, with 25-30 kids coming in the mornings. "It's really exciting to see that there are kids who want to get better for start and it'll progress from there". Now that Tom and Nic are playing for the Giants, Craig and Chris, who own the Richmond-based company Not Just Concrete, are spending even more time together. "We are both very proud of the boys and we love watching all the games," Chris says. "It's great to see them have the opportunity to follow their passion and the Giants are pretty special team - they are Nelson's team."

A younger member of the Dawnbreakers Fishing Club, Tyler Curtis, reeling in a catch off the wharf at Wakefield Quay earlier this month. The Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club hosted its annual club wharf fishing evening recently, where several families enjoyed fish and chips, a few laughs, and satisfaction watching the smiles on the faces of the children catch spotties, yellowtail mackerel and sprats from the wharf. Dawnbreakers encourage families to come and experience all aspects of fishing, and starting off with wharf fishing is usually a child's first taste of catching fish, and hopefully gets them 'hooked' into the sport longterm. The secret to successful wharf fishing is using the right rod and hooks, Sabiki hooks are recommended, these come with 5-6 small hooks in a rig, sometimes with lumo beads or fish skin skirts. Adding a small piece

of bait will give added advantage. Tie some burley to the wharf near to where you are fishing will help entice the fish in close. Keeping it simple with the right gear will also ensure the kids chances of pulling up a fish are good. Big rods and hooks are not ideal at wharfs, especially for young family members learning. An hour either side of the high tide is also good for a decent bite time. With Easter-time here, it is a good chance to spend some quality time with your family, so use it wisely and take the kids fishing. It's better for them to learn the skills early, so they can catch their own as they get older, and in turn pass the skills onto their own children. Happy Easter everyone from the Dawnbreakers Fishing Club.
